Now make phone calls from Gmail

Google is all set to allow its users to make a phone calls from its e-mail services, Gmail. With the new facility, Gmail users will be able to make landline as well as mobile phone calls from their e-mail accounts.
The internet giant's offering would take the competition directly to Skype, which is one of the most succesful internet telephone servive providers with around 560 million registered users.
Calls to US and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our low rates. Users have to shell out as little as two cents a minute for calls to countries such as US, Germany, Japan and China. Calls to India would be charged at six cents a minute. For using the facility, users have to click ' Call Phone' option in the chat list and then enter the contact number.

An offer he can't refuse

Francis Ford Coppola, director of cult classics films such as the Godfather series, will be awarded a lifetime achievment Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science , it has been announced.
The Academy said the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award would be presented to him on Nov 13. Awards will also be presented to historian and presevationist Kevin Brownlow , director Jean -Luc Godard and actor Eli Wallach.
for Mr. Coppola (71) this will be a recoed breaking sixth Academy award, four of which he won for the Godfather films and one for original screenplay for Patton

Asia's smallest frog found

Asia's tiniest frog, a creature the size of a pea, has been discovered in a national park in Malaysia's Bornea island, researchers said on Thursday.
The frog measure just three mm when it metamorphoses from a tadpole, and grows to about nine to 11mm. It was named Microhlya nepenthicola after the Nepenthes ampulaaria, a miniature pitcher plant in which it lives.

Russian opens short-cut Asia sea route

Faster and cheaper than tha Suez route

Russia has opened a shortcut northern sea route from Europe to Asia across the Arctic, reasserting itself as the dominant power in the startegic mineral-rich region.
A Russian tanker , escorted by powerful nuclear icebreakers, successfully skirted the ice bound Arctic coastline of Russia with a load of gas condensate for China.
The 114,564- tonne tanker Baltica is the first super vessel to navigate the northern waterway. Earlier, only ships with a maximum deadweight of 14,000 tonnes ventured the route. Official said the succesful journey proved the route route was safe and economically viable.
The Arctic Sea route is almost twice faster than the Suez canal route and about 15 percent cheaper, according to Leonoid Mikhelson, head of Novotek, a Russian natural gas company which has sent the Baltica on its trailblazing vayage.

Saina storms into quarterfinals

Japan's Hirose stuns top seed Yihan Wang.


India's saina Nehwal stormed into the quarterfinals of the wold Badminton Championships, beating Russia;s Ella Diehl in straight games here on Thursday.
The second -seeded Indian took just 40 mins to tame 13th seed Diehl 21-41,21-18 in third round of the women's singles event.
But minutes before the start of saina's match, World No.1 and top seed Yihan Wang of China was stunned by Japan's Eriko in a three -game thriller that lasted an hour and fifteen minutes. Hiros won 20-22, 21-16, 21-18.

Solar System found

Astronomers have discovered what they claim is a vast solar system of seven planets, orbiting a sun-like star, 127 light years away from Earth.
An international team has confirmed the presence of the five planets and have tantalising evidence of two more in the planetary system which is believed to be the largest ever detected beyound the sun.
The distance of the planets from their parent star follow a regular pattern, similar to that seen in our own solar system, say the astronomers.
We have found what is most likely the system with the most likely the system with the most planets yet discovered. This remarkable discovery also hightlights the fact that we are now entering a new era in exoplanet research: the study of complex plantenary systems and not just of individual planets.

Suzuki Motorcycle launches mass segment bike

Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd. on Wednesday launched its 125cc bike Sling Shot, targeted at the mass segment. The indian subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation also announced an investment of Rs. 500 crore to double its production capacity by 2012.
Priced at Rs. 43,945 (ex-showrrom Delhi), Sling Shot was being postioned to fill the void that now existed between 100cc and 150cc segments without compromising on the key parameters that a customer aspires for-style of a 150cc and the efficiency of a 100cc bike, Suzuki Motorcycle India Chairman Katsumi Takata told journalists here.
According to Suzuki Motorcycle India Vice President (Sales and Marketing ) Atul Gupta," our new offering is a complete package in term of style, comfort, performance and practicality-all combined in a 125cc bike."
The new bike is equipped with 'pulsed-secondary air-injection(PAIR)' system that gives high combustion efficiency for enchanched mileage and reduced emission.

Beijing's ten day traffic jam drags on

Over three days and two nights, wang , a truck- driver , managed to haul his coal-carrying truck over a grand distance of tem km.
Mr. Wang's truck, and several hundred others, have over the past ten days been inching their way along the 110 Expressway, part of a 100-km-long convoy that, according to some reports, may perhaps be the world's longest -ever traffic jam.
Since August 14, the 110 has become one, big parking lot. The extreme congestion on the highways, which runs between Huaian  in Hebei province, northwest of Beijing , and Jining in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, a coal mining centre , is a result of maintenance  work, necessitated by the damage caused by overloaded coal trucks trying to meet the rising demand for coal trucks trying to meet the rising demand for coal in China's capital, official said.
